Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction and Inio Asano's art change...

Hello ! Welcome back for a new post, today I wanted to change the pace a bit. So far I've only talked about mangas I finished reading not too long ago, which meant my memory was fresh and I knew what to say about them, yet today I wanted to change it up a bit ! We're still gonna talk about a manga of course, but I wanted to focus on the art this time.

We're gonna talk about Inio Asano, which is my favorite mangaka ! The first manga I read of him was Oyasumi Punpun; with it being first released in 2007. Of course I didn't read it as soon as it came ou and honestly I don't even remember when I read it.

The manga tells the story of this little guy, Punpun. We follow him through his life. It's basically a manga about how someone as pure as a kid can grow up to become a monster due to the circumstances of his home and the people around him. It's a truly tragic story that left most people still shocked to this day. I really enjoyed it tho, I think ever once in a while, it's good to read more depressing stories, it teaches you a lot about how the mangaka thinks about certain subjects and gives you some good ideas for the way you look at life.

The evolution of punpun throughout the manga, from his childhood to his adulthood :

At this point, Inio's Asano's artstyle was focused on realism, not with Punpun of course since he looks like a sort of chicken (Mostly symbolism of how punpun stands out compared to other people) but with other characters, take his childhood crush for exemple, Aiko Tanaka :
Or even his girlfriend who                                                                                                                          shows up later in the manga.
Character's had this realsim to them that was honestly impressive, tho Inio Asano was best at it through depiction of backgrounds, that even today I'm impressed by :

The city of Osaka in Punpun

The city of Osaka in comparison.

Yet, in Inio Asano's new manga called : Dead Dead Demon Dededede Destruction (Quite the tongue twister), he totally changed his artstyle, dropping the realist look of the characters and going for something more caricatural in a way, accentuating on the character's unique facial traits, for exemple :

Here is most of the main cast and as you can see, most have original traits: Tooth gap that's way too large, simple noses, a character that literally drools most of the time, clearly Inio's realist approach of characters as totally disappeared, and yet he kept his realistic backgrounds. My guess is that he did this for Dead demon, trying to give it a simple and cute look, tho the story is mixed with comedy and serious problems. It's a simple story : Highschool girls try to graduate while a massive spaceship hover on top of Japan. This creates multiple problems : Should you keep leaving Japan in such a state ? How does the governement takes measure for something like this or even how would the meeting between humans and aliens happen. So, as simple as it may look on the outside, this manga is quite serious with it's topics and knows how to handle them while keeping a comedic and cute story. As a finale, here's a video of Inio Asano drawing some of the art of this manga from his official youtube channel !
